كانت الشنطي، البالغة من العمر 68 عامًا، معلمة وأستاذة جامعية وسياسية فلسطينية، وكانت من أبرز قيادات حركة حماس. وقد لعبت دورًا رئيسيًا في الحركة منذ نشأتها، وكانت من أبرز الأصوات المناهضة للاحتلال الإسرائيلي.

وُلدت الشنطي في مخيم جباليا عام 1957 في فلسطين، ونشطت في صفوف حركة حماس منذ نشأتها عام 1987. وقد شغلت مناصب عديدة في الحركة، منها عضوية المكتب السياسي، ورئيسة لجنة التربية والتعليم، ورئيسة دائرة الإعلام.
